Eleven students enrolled in the Polaris Biomedical Science programs at Berea-Midpark and Olmsted Falls High Schools recently competed at the HOSA-Future Health Professionals state competition in Columbus. HOSA’s mission is to empower young people to become leaders in the global health community, through education, collaboration and experience. HOSA competitions allow students to showcase their skills and abilities in specific career-technical training areas with a focus on healthcare. This year, hundreds of students from around Ohio competed in dozens of different events. Two Polaris students took home first-place honors along with three others who placed second and all qualified to compete at nationals in Houston, Texas, on June 26-29, 2024.
Molly Kramer, a junior from Olmsted Falls High School, placed first in Pathophysiology. In this competitive event, she had to complete a written test with a tiebreaker essay question. The goal is to inspire students to learn about the anatomy and physiology of human diseases impacting the health community.
Lily Marshall, also a junior from Olmsted Falls, took first in Health Informatics. This event consists of a written test that assesses each competitor’s knowledge and skills related to health information systems, analysis of healthcare data and information and clinical research processes. It also includes a tiebreaker essay question.
Mackenzie Peck, a senior from Berea-Midpark High School, finished second in the Health Care Issues competition. During this challenge, she was evaluated on her ability to investigate, analyze and apply her knowledge of current health-related issues. This event consists of a multiple-choice test and one tiebreaker essay question.
Amelia Mockbee, senior, Mackenzie Peck, senior, and Tiffany Talbott, junior, all from Berea-Midpark High School, took second place in Mental Health Promotion. In this team event, they were charged to create and publish a social media campaign for their peers centered on building and promoting protective factors around a selected mental health topic. This event aims to provide information on how to support someone struggling with their mental health and to inspire future health professionals to promote the importance of mental health in their schools and communities.
This is an AMAZING accomplishment! Congratulations to our competition winners and good luck at nationals!
